Tennessee Apprenticeship Tax Credits and Employer Incentives Explained

Tennessee runs registered apprenticeship through Apprenticeship TN, which helps employers design and register a program at no cost. State apprenticeship grant money goes through local workforce boards: up to $2,500 per first or second year apprentice and up to $1,500 per third or fourth year apprentice, for at most two years per apprentice. The state's own Apprenticeship Training Grant web page no longer exists as of September 2026, so confirm current funds with your board before you plan around them. Tennessee has no state apprenticeship tax credit.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Tennessee Apprenticeship questions.

How much can I get per apprentice?

Up to $2,500 for a first or second year apprentice and up to $1,500 for a third or fourth year apprentice, for no more than two years. These are from one board's 2023 guidance and the state Comptroller's 2024 report. Ask your board for its current terms.

SOURCE: COMPTROLLER.TN.GOV
Does Tennessee have an apprenticeship tax credit?

No. A 2001 bill to create a $2,000 apprenticeship credit (Senate Bill 1548) failed in committee. A federal listing that mentions it describes that bill, not current law. See the tax credit page for the job tax credits that do exist.

SOURCE: WAPP.CAPITOL.TN.GOV
Can I also use on-the-job training money for an apprentice?

Yes. The Comptroller says state OJT funds can cover up to 50% of an on-the-job trainee's wages, apprentices included, during an agreed period. Your board sets the terms.

SOURCE: COMPTROLLER.TN.GOV
Does it cost anything to register a program?

No. Apprenticeship TN regional directors work with you at no cost to your organization, from standards through registration paperwork.
